I Want A House

For over 10 years now, I've been an apartment dweller. I really do want a house. However, this is a poetry assignment I did for a meetup I just joined. It's called Kindred Spirits, and this poetry meetup is twice a month.

I really had a great time. Here we were in the back meeting room of Tiffany's Restaurant in Palm Harbor. There were 6 other people there, and they were all very friendly. I had to ask everyone their names twice to remember them, except the man who introduced himself, "Hi, my name is Manoj...as in Menage a trois". Great ice breaker, and I didn't have to ask him his name a second time.

So we all brought our assignment, called "I want a house". The challenge was to "describe the ideal house to accommodate your evolving spirit, essence, metaphysical self, your spiritual milieu". The house in this case a metaphor. Any length, any style...and here is the etheree I came up with about an hour before the meetup:

Home
Is where
My heart is.
Sanctuary.
Skylights and windows
Allow the light and air
To circulate. Cozy nooks
With stacks of books and pillows
On a window seat. Cups of coffee
and tea. Mountain home with a view.

Short and sweet, I really like how etherees keep building to the end. We did a workshop challenge while we were there...18 lines, a story, including 4 pronouns. I was the last one to finish while people picked at their food.

The homework for next week is an isolation exercise. It's to write a description of one particular element of a set. Like "one face in a crowd", or "one voice out of many". The goal is to describe the characteristics of the group and what distinguishes the one from the others. Oh, and its to be in lyric form. I've got two weeks to work on it.
